Cat Wu, the head of product for Claude Code and Cowork at Anthropic, has left the company. Business Insider reported that she left on Friday and announced it on X on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The outlet says Anthropic confirmed her departure. She did not say what prompted it.
Wu was one of two public faces of Claude Code, alongside its creator, Boris Cherny. Her exit lands as Anthropic heads toward a very large public offering later this month, and a few weeks after another visible Claude Code builder, Thariq Shihipar, said he was leaving.

Business Insider is the only outlet we found with the full account, and part of its page is subscriber-only. Wu's own X post is the primary source for her words. We did not read it directly, so we cite only what Business Insider quotes from it: that she tested an early Claude Code prototype, "It worked, I was hooked, and I joined the team."
Who is Cat Wu, and what did she run?
According to Business Insider, Wu joined Anthropic in summer 2024 and tested an early prototype of Claude Code. Anthropic released the tool in research preview in February 2025, announcing it with a short demo video that featured Wu and Cherny.
The outlet adds that, as head of product, she was one of the two top leaders and evangelists for the technology, and that she also oversaw Cowork, Anthropic's tool for non-coding knowledge work, which runs on the same models. Her duties, in her own description on Lenny's Podcast in April, included working with marketing, sales and finance, hiring product managers, and answering user requests about Claude Code on social media.
The episode page on Lenny's Newsletter, published April 23, 2026, lists topics such as how Anthropic's release cadence moved from months to weeks to days, building products that do not fully work yet so they are ready when the next model arrives, and a "just do things" culture. The full discussion is paywalled, so we treat those as the episode's stated topics, not as verified claims.
Business Insider also recounts a short detour: Wu and Cherny left for the AI coding startup Cursor in summer 2025 and returned to Anthropic a couple of weeks later, as The Information had reported.
Why this matters to people who build with Claude Code
Claude Code is no longer a side project. Business Insider calls it one of the most important products in the AI industry's history and says it gave Anthropic the viral product it needed to lift revenue and fund compute. When a product at that scale loses its product lead, builders ask three practical questions.
- Will the roadmap shift? Product leads set priorities: which features ship, which get cut, how fast. A new lead may keep the plan. We have no evidence either way.
- Who answers feedback? Wu replied to users on social media. The same worry came up when Shihipar left, and we noted then that companies rarely explain individual exits. Watch whether the same public channels keep answering.
- Does Cowork change? Cowork was merged with Chat into a single Claude app in September and gained a built-in browser earlier. Wu oversaw it, so Cowork's product owner is also an open question.
None of these has an answer today. Keep in mind how many people work on a product like this: Anthropic has also added well-known engineers to the effort, for example Addy Osmani joining to work on Claude Code, so leadership of the public-facing work is spread across more people than two.

What Wu's published approach tells us about the product
Because no reason for the exit is public, the most useful thing to read is what Wu said about how she worked. The topics on the Lenny's episode page describe a team that ships fast, builds features before the model can fully support them, and asks the model to reflect on its own mistakes. If those habits belong to the team and not to one person, they should outlast any single leader. If they belonged mostly to her, watch the release cadence over the next few weeks.
You can test that yourself without guessing. Count how many Claude Code and Cowork releases appear in the official changelog in the four weeks before October 30 and in the four weeks after. A steady cadence is a weak signal that the machine runs without her. A visible slowdown would be a stronger one, though it could also come from IPO preparation, a quiet period, or a model cycle.
How this fits Anthropic's bigger picture
Business Insider describes Claude Code as the product that let Anthropic grow revenue and access more funding for compute, and says enterprise token bills rose as developers adopted it. That is why a product-lead change draws attention: the tool is tied to the company's revenue story, which investors will read closely in the coming weeks.
It also explains why readers should separate three kinds of news. A confirmed personnel change, like this one, is a fact. A reported valuation range is a claim with sources. A guess about internal reasons is speculation. We label each in our IPO coverage, and the same discipline applies here. If you are deciding whether to standardize your team on Claude Code, base the decision on price, limits, output quality and security fit, which are all unchanged by this news.
Is this connected to the IPO?
Business Insider frames the exit as coming "before" the IPO and says the company is heading toward it later this month. That is timing, not causation. We have seen no source tying her decision to the offering, to pay, or to any disagreement. Our coverage of the offering stays on what is sourced: the WSJ-reported valuation range and what Anthropic has not said, and the governance questions experts raise.
People often leave a company before an IPO for ordinary reasons, and people also leave after it. A departure in the weeks before a listing is worth noting for readers who follow the company, but it is not evidence of trouble by itself.
What developers should do now
You do not need to change anything today. A few low-effort habits help when a product's leadership shifts.
- Pin your workflows to documented behavior. Use the commands reference and your own project settings, so a change in defaults shows up in a diff and not as a surprise.
- Follow the official changelog, not rumor. Product direction shows in release notes and the official Claude Code docs. Treat posts about a "new direction" as unconfirmed until they appear there.
- Keep your adoption plan model-agnostic where you can. Cherny's five-step Claude Code adoption ladder is about team process more than any single feature. A process that works at each step survives a roadmap change.
- Do not read the news as a product warning. Nothing reported so far changes pricing, limits or model access.
What we are watching
- A named successor for Claude Code product, and for Cowork.
- Wu's next role, if she announces one.
- Any note from Anthropic on how the Claude Code team is organized.
- Whether more departures follow. Two exits in two weeks is a pattern in posts, not a confirmed trend.
Questions people are asking
Is Boris Cherny still at Anthropic? Business Insider describes him as Claude Code's original creator and one of its two top leaders and gives no sign he is leaving.
Did she go to a competitor? Not stated. Her post, as quoted by Business Insider, is a thank-you to the team and users and a look back at the tool's progress.
Does this affect my subscription? There is no reported change to plans, limits or prices.
Bottom line
Cat Wu's exit is a real, confirmed personnel change at the center of Anthropic's most visible product. Why she left, who takes over, and whether anything changes are all unknown. We will update this post when Anthropic or Wu says more.
