Model Hardware Standard

The Model Hardware Standard (MHS) is Anthropic's open specification letting AI agents safely discover and operate physical lab and manufacturing equipment through a standardized driver layer.

Ask Melo about this← all terms

Previewed by Anthropic on August 27, 2026 as a research preview with a first group of scientific labs and manufacturers, MHS introduces a standardized driver — software translating between an OS and a device using simple read/write primitives — plus a discoverability format so devices and agents can find each other without bespoke integration code. It also lets users encode physical safety context (like a robot arm's weight or a laser's safe range) in natural language, either self-authored or produced by an agent interviewing them about their setup. It is model-agnostic and reachable via MCP, a CLI, or code/API, and began as a collaboration between Anthropic's Alek Kemeny and HHMI Janelia postdoc Arco Bast.
