Model Family

A model family is a set of related AI models released by one company under a shared name and architecture lineage, typically spanning different capability and cost tiers — for example, small/fast, mid-size, and flagship variants.

Ask Melo about this← all terms

Naming a model as part of a family signals shared training lineage and typically shared API conventions, even as individual members trade off capability against speed and cost — as with GPT-5.6's Sol/Terra/Luna tiers or Claude's Opus/Sonnet/Haiku tiers. Understanding which family tier a model belongs to is usually more informative for choosing a model than the raw release date alone.
