Google Messages Enhanced Protection: Gemini Reads Unknown-Sender Chats for Scams

Google has announced a new layer of AI scam defenses for Android, led by an opt-in Enhanced protection mode in Google Messages that lets cloud Gemini models judge whether an unknown sender is a scammer. The announcement, dated October 14, 2026, appears in an Android Security blog post by Alberto Pastor Nieto and Shaifali Bhandari and was reported by The Verge, Engadget and Unite.AI. Google says its Scam Detection tools now flag more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts every month.

This post sorts the announcement into what ships when, which phones get it, what the privacy design is, and which claims come only from Google. If you want the earlier thread on on-device scam models, see our coverage of DeepMind and Singapore's on-device scam detection with Gemma.

Enhanced protection: what Gemini is allowed to see

Scam texts evolve over a conversation. A first message may be harmless ("Hi, is this Alex?") and only later turn into a request for money or a link. Enhanced protection is aimed at that gap. With the setting on, Scam Detection can use cloud Gemini models through Private AI Compute to assess the fuller context of a conversation and identify a possible scammer's intent sooner. Google says the cloud analysis supplements the existing on-device detection and is built to surface novel and sophisticated attacks.

The privacy claim is the part to read carefully. Google says messages processed in Private AI Compute are encrypted and handled inside a dedicated secure environment that nobody else can access, Google included. That is Google's description of its design; we have not seen an independent audit in the coverage. A footnote adds that if you choose to report a text as spam, the message and its contents are sent to Google for analysis. Because Enhanced protection is opt-in, the choice is yours, and it applies to conversations with unknown senders rather than your contacts.

Three layers in Messages

  1. Cloud intent assessment (Enhanced protection) through Private AI Compute.
  2. On-device Gemini Nano link safety that weaves real-time web signals into judging whether an unfamiliar link is trustworthy before you tap. Google notes that attackers routinely register brand-new sites that existing blocklists have not catalogued.
  3. Redesigned link warnings that slow you down with context before opening links from numbers outside your contacts. This used to be limited to devices in select countries or with Android Advanced Protection.

Which phones get what

Per the Unite.AI summary of Google's footnotes, Private AI Compute analysis covers Pixel 6 and newer, the Galaxy S24 series and newer, Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold6 and newer, and other Android AICore devices. The Gemini Nano link checks are for Pixel 10 and later, the Galaxy S26 series, Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold8, and other select devices. Link warnings work on Android 6 or later. Coverage differs slightly between outlets on device lists, so use Google's post for the definitive table before telling a relative to switch it on.

Scam Detection in chat notifications, first on Pixel, is expanding through partnerships with HONOR, Infinix, iQOO, itel, JOVI, Motorola, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, TECNO, vivo and Xiaomi, with availability varying by maker. Google says it will reach hundreds of millions of additional users later in 2026.

Beyond messages: calls, screens and banks

Call forwarding. Scammers sometimes redirect a victim's incoming calls to intercept one-time passcodes. Android will stop apps from silently turning on forwarding in the background and warn before a manually dialed forwarding code takes effect. Google says this arrives in early December 2026 on Pixel and select devices.

Screen sharing. Android already hides sensitive information during screen sharing in native apps. The extension to Chrome and Android WebView obscures login fields and payment screens while a share session is live, rolling out in October 2026 on Android 15 or later. This matters because a common scam script has the caller ask the victim to share their screen "for support".

Verified financial calls. With partners including Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco, the feature works with official banking apps to confirm in real time that an incoming call was truly initiated by the bank. If a caller claiming to be the bank fails the check, Android ends the call and alerts the user. Google says that since the June 2026 launch it has blocked more than 3 million spoofed calls from those two banks alone, and cites FEBRABAN as saying bank-impersonation scams in Brazil rose 195.7% over 12 months. Revolut is named as another protected institution, with developer documentation for more banks.

What is Google's own claim

None of these numbers are independently verified in the coverage we read. They are still useful as signals of scale, and the verified-calls design (the bank confirms the call, rather than a model guessing) is architecturally the strongest idea in the package.

Why this matters for AI watchers

  • Hybrid on-device and cloud models. Google is splitting the job: a small on-device Gemini Nano for fast link checks and cloud Gemini for deep context, with a privacy enclave in between. The same split shows up in DeepMind's Singapore scam work, and in the broader AI scam economy claim check.
  • Defense catches up to AI-written lures. As generative AI makes scam text cleaner, intent analysis over a conversation replaces spotting typos. The Bill Gates warning on AI cyberattacks points the same direction.
  • Opt-in privacy trade-offs. Cloud analysis of unknown-sender messages is a real privacy decision, even with Private AI Compute. Opt-in plus a stated secure-enclave design is the right shape, but verification is on Google's word.
  • Verification beats detection. Bank-confirmed calls cannot be fooled by a better model on the attacker's side.

What to do

  1. When Enhanced protection reaches your device, decide deliberately whether to turn it on; read the in-app description of what is sent.
  2. Never share your screen with a caller, whatever the reason, and never type a forwarding code (usually starting with star or hash symbols) because someone asked.
  3. Treat any link from an unknown number as hostile even if the warning does not fire; tools miss things.
  4. If you build or deploy AI agents that read messages or browse for you, remember that those agents can be targeted by the same lures. AgentBeam is the agent security platform from the explainx.ai team that stops AI agents before they take dangerous actions.
  5. Report scam texts as spam, knowing the content goes to Google when you do.

What people are asking

Does Enhanced protection read all my messages? Google's description limits it to conversations with unknown senders, and it is off unless you enable it. Messages from saved contacts are not the target of the feature as described.

Is this the same as the scam detection already on Pixels? It builds on it. Existing Scam Detection runs on-device. Enhanced protection adds a cloud tier for harder cases, so a slow-burn scam that only reveals itself several messages in can be caught earlier.

Why does a bank-call check matter more than another detector? Detection is a guessing game that attackers can tune against. Verified financial calls turn it into a lookup: the bank app confirms whether it initiated the call. A spoofed number cannot pass that check however convincing the voice is, including an AI-cloned one.

Will it work on my older phone? Link warnings work on Android 6 or later, but the Gemini-based layers need recent hardware, as the device lists above show. Older phones get the redesigned warnings, not the cloud and Gemini Nano checks.

What is missing from the announcement? Precision and false-positive rates, an independent privacy audit, and dates beyond "coming weeks". Treat the 5 million figure as scale, not accuracy.

Open questions

  • Exact availability dates for Enhanced protection beyond "coming weeks".
  • Whether the feature will extend to RCS group chats or other apps.
  • False-positive rates; Google gives volume of flags, not precision.
  • Independent review of Private AI Compute's guarantees for this use.
