OpenAI's personal finance tools for ChatGPT, which launched on May 15, 2026 as a Pro-only preview, are now available to US users on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, according to OpenAI's Finances page and launch coverage. The pitch: connect your bank, card and investment accounts through Plaid, and ask questions in plain language.
Making a feature free changes who uses it. A tool that was a premium experiment is now something a very large number of people can switch on in minutes. That makes the practical questions — what it sees, what you can undo, and what you should not do — worth answering clearly.

What it does
After you link accounts, ChatGPT builds a dashboard of spending, subscriptions, portfolio performance and upcoming payments. You can then ask questions such as whether your spending has changed recently or how to plan for buying a house in five years.
Launch coverage in May noted that OpenAI planned to add an Intuit integration for tax-impact analysis and credit-approval odds, and that the launch followed OpenAI's acquisition of the team behind personal-finance startup Hiro in April 2026. OpenAI also pointed to the volume of money questions people already ask ChatGPT, which coverage put at more than 200 million monthly users asking financial questions.
The shift from Pro to everyone is consistent with the staged plan described at launch: preview with Pro users, improve the product based on their feedback, then expand to Plus and beyond.
How the connection works
Plaid sits between ChatGPT and your financial institutions. It is the same connectivity layer used by Venmo, Robinhood and most major budgeting apps. The flow:
- Open the Finances tab in the ChatGPT sidebar, or ask ChatGPT to connect your accounts.
- Choose your institution in the Plaid window and authenticate with it.
- Approve the accounts and data types to share.
- ChatGPT receives balances, transactions and investment data and populates the dashboard.
You authenticate with your bank through Plaid, not by typing bank credentials into ChatGPT itself. That is a meaningful design choice, but it is not the same as the data staying private: once connected, ChatGPT can read the data you shared.
Controls you have
According to launch coverage, you can:
- Disconnect accounts from Settings, Apps, Finances.
- Rely on removal of synced data 30 days after disconnection.
- View and delete financial memories from the Finances page, which covers facts ChatGPT retains about your finances.
Two things the coverage does not establish, and that you should verify in OpenAI's current documentation:
- Whether ChatGPT can initiate transactions. Reports describe read access and give no indication that it moves money.
- Whether financial data is used for model training. Again, no indication in launch coverage, but this is the question to confirm in settings and policy.
A safe way to try it
You do not have to connect everything. Treat it like granting any app access to sensitive data.
- Start with one account. A checking account or a single credit card is enough to see what the dashboard offers.
- Prefer read-only, low-balance accounts first. Use something you can afford to expose while you evaluate.
- Check your data and memory settings before connecting. Look for options controlling memory and training.
- Use strong authentication on your OpenAI account. If someone gets into your ChatGPT account while it is linked, they can see your financial summary.
- Review financial memories after a week. Delete anything you do not want retained.
- Disconnect when done if you were only testing, and note the 30-day removal window.
- Do not paste account numbers, passwords or full statements into chat. The linked data should make that unnecessary.
What to use it for, and what not to
Good uses:
- Finding forgotten subscriptions and recurring charges.
- Summarizing spending by category over a month or quarter.
- Scenario planning: how changing savings or paying down a loan alters your timeline.
- Preparing questions for an advisor, not replacing one.
Use with caution:
- Tax, investment and legal decisions. Treat answers as a starting point. A model can misread categories, miss accounts that are not linked, or be confidently wrong.
- Anything that depends on exact figures. Verify against your statements.
- Shared accounts. Consider whose data you are exposing.

Prompts that work well with linked data
Once accounts are connected, specific questions beat vague ones. These are good starting points, and each can be verified against your statements.
- "List every recurring charge over the last three months, with the monthly cost and the date it started."
- "Compare my spending by category this month with the previous two months and flag anything that rose more than 25 percent."
- "Which three subscriptions have I used least, based on the charges and anything else you can see?"
- "If I increase my monthly savings by 200 dollars, how does my emergency fund timeline change?"
- "Draft five questions I should ask a financial advisor about my current portfolio mix."
Notice what these have in common: they ask for analysis of data you can check, not for a recommendation to buy or sell. After each answer, spot-check two numbers against your bank's own statement. If the model miscounts or mislabels a category, correct it in the conversation so the memory improves, and delete the memory if it is wrong.
How this fits OpenAI's push into connected data
Finances is part of a pattern: ChatGPT is moving from a chat window to a hub that connects to your data. OpenAI has done the same with health records — see ChatGPT's Epic EHR integration — and with messages on Mac, covered in ChatGPT's Apple Messages integration. It is also building always-on agents, as in OpenAI Dots.
Each connector follows the same trade: the assistant gets more useful as it sees more, and the cost of a mistake or a breach rises with it. That tension is why the week's other stories — Apple's response to the Muse Full Disk Access dispute, and the local-first alternative in Underdog — are relevant even to a finance feature. What people are asking
Is it really free?
Finances is listed as available on the Free plan in the US. Free plans can have usage limits and ads in some markets, so expect the experience to differ from paid tiers. Go costs $8 per month and sits between Free and Plus.
Is it safe to give ChatGPT my bank data?
It is a risk decision, not a yes or no. Plaid-based linking avoids typing credentials into ChatGPT, and you can disconnect and delete. You are still sharing sensitive data with a third party. Share the minimum, secure your account, and verify the privacy terms.
Does it work outside the US?
The availability described is for users in the United States.
Can I use it on mobile?
The May preview was on ChatGPT web and iOS. Check your app for current availability.
Will it give me financial advice?
It can analyze and explain your data and discuss options. It is not a licensed advisor, and for consequential decisions you should consult one.
Honest limitations
- I could not load OpenAI's Finances page directly; availability and controls come from search summaries and May launch coverage.
- Settings and data policies can change; verify them in the app.
- No independent security review of the integration is cited here.
- Nothing in this article is financial advice.
Bottom line
ChatGPT Finances has moved from a Pro preview to US Free and Go users. It can be a useful way to spot subscriptions and understand spending, with Plaid-based linking and the ability to disconnect and delete. Start with one account, secure your login, check the memory and training settings, and keep consequential decisions with a human.
