Q-Star (or Q*) is buzzing in the tech grapevine, especially after some high-profile changes at OpenAI (covered in our previous issue). This model, reportedly capable of solving grade-school math, has the tech community on the edge of their seats.
Here’s what DALLE thinks what Q-Star looks like.
Look at Musk’s comment on Ilya’s tweet after the board re-united. A lot of speculations state OpenAI discovered something dangerous we’re not ready for yet.
Why?
Because it's being hailed as a potential milestone in AI's journey towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to a hypothetical AI that can understand, learn, and apply its intelligence to a wide range of problems, much like a human brain. Unlike current AI (Expert Systems), which excels in specific tasks, AGI would be a versatile, all-encompassing intellect.
Why is Math a Big Deal for AI (a question i once asked my teacher)?
Well, a lot of speculations state that the whole OpenAI Drama was because of this discovery. To a point where top researchers and engineers were willing to destroy the entire company for the sake of keeping this a secret.
That’s a pretty big deal.
Next. AI is almost like me, it hates math. For years, it has grappled with mathematical problems. While existing models like ChatGPT and GPT-4 can dabble in math, they're far from perfect. The challenge isn't just about crunching numbers; it's about the AI's ability to reason and understand abstract concepts.
That's where Q-Star could change the game and no, it’s not just a win in solving equations. It signifies an AI that can understand and apply mathematical concepts, possibly leading to breakthroughs in fields like coding, scientific research, and personalized education.
So our kids will probably not need our help to do math homeworks anymore.
However
However, let's not get carried away. Solving elementary math doesn't mean we're at the cusp of AGI or superintelligence. We've been down this road of hype before, like with Google DeepMind’s Gato.
Note the whole concept of Q-Star was first introduced by Google just like Transformers (which paved the way for Generative AI).
But we don’t really know a lot at this point so it’s better to wait and see what’s coming our way, i hope it’s not an army of machines.
What else is going on in AI?
AI21 Labs, a company developing generative AI products similar to OpenAI's GPT-4 and ChatGPT, successfully raised $53 million last week. This funding brings the company's total raised amount to $336 million, indicating significant growth and interest in the field of generative AI.
The market value of generative AI-based cybersecurity platforms, systems, and solutions is projected to increase significantly. It is expected to rise from $1.6 billion in 2022 to $11.2 billion in 2032, indicating a compound annual growth rate of 22%. This highlights the growing importance and potential of generative AI in enhancing cybersecurity, especially in a zero-trust world.
A significant international AI safety agreement has been signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and several other countries. This agreement, although non-binding and largely advisory, represents a global effort by governments to influence the trajectory of AI development and ensure its safe and ethical use.
Until next time.
