Google DeepMind is apparently building a ChatGPT killer AI bot

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an ever-evolving field that consistently pushes boundaries and exceeds our expectations. It's no surprise that the minds behind Google DeepMind, the research lab responsible for some of the most significant AI innovations to date, are building a large language model that aims to rival OpenAI's revolutionary AI bot, ChatGPT. Codenamed "Gemini," this ambitious project is seeking to blend groundbreaking techniques to redefine the capabilities of AI.

The Birth of a New Contender: Gemini

ChatGPT has been a game-changer in the world of AI, setting a benchmark in machine-human interaction. Built by OpenAI, ChatGPT cost an estimated $100 million to create. Such an investment has brought about an AI bot that has made waves across the globe with its intricate and nuanced conversational abilities.

However, where there is innovation, there is competition. In the bustling tech landscape, Google's DeepMind lab asserts that their upcoming large language model will challenge, and potentially surpass, OpenAI's bot. The man at the helm of this ambitious endeavor is none other than Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind.

Leveraging the Legacy of AlphaGo

The DeepMind lab has a history of creating AI systems that set new standards. Their AlphaGo program, which famously defeated a champion Go player in 2016, was an unprecedented display of AI's potential. The AlphaGo-related techniques utilized in this triumph are now being repurposed to fuel the development of Gemini.

Hassabis disclosed, "At a high level, you can think of Gemini as combining some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the amazing language capabilities of the large models.” He went on to hint at "new innovations" that will contribute to Gemini's unique strengths.

The Promise of Gemini

Gemini's architecture draws parallels to GPT-4, the engine that powers ChatGPT, but with a twist. The DeepMind team is integrating technology with AlphaGo-specific strategies to enhance Gemini's abilities, including planning and problem-solving skills.

AlphaGo is built on a unique method invented by DeepMind known as reinforcement learning. This process involves training computer programs to master complex tasks through repeated attempts and performance evaluation. Combined with a technique called tree search, used to explore and store potential moves, the result is a system capable of decision-making at an intricate level.

Challenges and Progress

Despite the promising developments, the completion of Gemini is not an immediate prospect. Hassabis has indicated that the project is still several months from completion and may require an investment that matches or even surpasses that of ChatGPT. However, the CEO's confidence in the project's potential suggests that the wait and investment will be worthwhile.

DeepMind’s Bold Vision

The recent consolidation of DeepMind with Google's primary AI lab, Brain, into a singular unit, Google DeepMind, signals Google's commitment to advancing the frontier of AI technology. Hassabis suggests that these two entities have been responsible for 80-90% of recent AI innovations, reflecting the formidable capabilities of this new team.

As the AI race continues, Hassabis and his team are resolute in their goal to create an AI system that not only rivals but surpasses the capabilities of current large language models. While it remains to be seen how successful Gemini will be, it is evident that this project signifies a bold leap forward in the realm of AI, one that could potentially redefine our understanding and interaction with artificial intelligence.
